Juniors and Educational Activities
This important section was started in 1980 and, together with
the many varied sections within the Association there is tremendous
scope to educate interest in the sport of shooting, conservation
and allied matters. There is no minimum age for joining.
The junior section of the Leicestershire Wildfowlers aims to
provide its members with a broad range of activities and events
throughout the year. As an example this seasons calendar includes:
- Tench fishing at our conservation site, Priory
Water. This holds many specimen tench in the 6 to 8lb bracket
and was featured in the television programme "Screaming
Reels".
- Junior Piking match. Not only does Priory hold specimen tench
but also monster pike. From January to March it is rare that
a 20lb fish isn't banked at some point in the weekend.
The adult fishing section provide advice, guidance, tackle and
sausage cobs to juniors who take part in these days.
Probably the most popular activity amongst the junior members
is ferreting.
Many own and work their own ferrets and accompany the ferreting
section on their weekly trips across the thousands of acres of
Leicestershire the association has permission on.
On the shooting front a varied programme is provided that includes
evening duck flights, coastal
wildfowling, goose decoying and roost shoots. On all of these
juniors are accompanied by experienced and knowledgable club members.
All of the above are regular activities that take place every
year, however one-off days are organised throughout the season.
In September four lucky juniors will take part in a days hawking
that includes tuition on the handling and keeping of hawks, followed
by a hunt for rabbit using Harris Hawks.
